Seiko is a Japanese watch company that was founded in Tokyo in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop in the Ginza area of Tokyo, Japam. Eleven years later hebegan to produce clocks under the name Seikosha. According to Seiko’s official company history, titled “A Journey In Time: The Remarkable Story of Seiko” (2003), Seiko is a Japanese word meaning “exquisite”, “minute”, or “success”.

Seiko Watch Establishment by Kintaro Hattori of K.Hattori & Co.,Ltd predecessor of todays SEIKO Corporation.
1892
SEIKO Precision, formerly SEIKOSHA, was established as the clock manufacturing arm of SEIKO Corporation, with 10 employees.
1895,
Seiko produced its first pocket watch, which was named the “Timekeeper”. It was Japan’s first ever watch to be produced in-house.
1913,
Seiko introduced its first wristwatch, which was called the “Laurel”. It was one of Japan’s first wristwatches.
1924,
Seiko produced Japan’s first ever alarm clock.
1930
Diversified and commenced Camera Shutter production.
1959
Clock manufacturing continued to develop and we produced the first Quartz clocks.
1960,
Seiko produced Japan’s first ever self-winding watch, which was called the “Seiko Auto-5”.
1964
SEIKO serves as official timekeeper to the Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan.
1968
Introduced the S-300, Japan’s first desktop computer using hybrid IC’s.
1969,
Seiko introduced the Astron, the world’s first quartz watch. This watch revolutionized the watch industry and made Seiko a leader in quartz technology
1970
Detached from SEIKO Corporation and started development of Real Time On Line Computer systems.
1972
Served as official timer of the Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Developed the i8008, the worlds first 8-bit Micro Processor, in a joint project with Intel Corp.
1973
Introduced innovative ST-System On-Line data processing system which is the prototype of the LAN.seiko8
1975
Established Nippon Precision Circuits Co Ltd. Developed worlds first PLL LSI for CB transceiver use.
1975,
Seiko introduced the Kinetic, the world’s first quartz watch that generated its own electrical power from the movement of the wearer’s arm.
1980
Introduced the GP-80 Graphic printer series featuring SEIKO Precision’s own Uni-Hammer technology.
1985
Developed the world’s fastest calculator LSI.
1986
Established SEIKO Precision (Europe) GmbH in Germany.
1987
Developed a new electro luminescence technology for the internal use in the SEIKO Group. The Lumi-SheetR was used as the light source of SEIKO clock and watches.
1988
Started the ‘FLON gas abolishment project’.
1988,
Seiko introduced the Spring Drive, which combined the accuracy of quartz technology with the traditional mechanical movement of a watch.
1989
Established manufacturing plant in Thailand.
1991
Started the ‘Protection of the Earth environment committee’ of the SEIKO Precision group, and abolished altogether the specific FLON gas (FLON 113) from all the SEIKOSHA companies.
1992
SEIKO Group served as the official timer of the Olympic games at Barcelona. The electro luminescent lamp is integrated to backlight LCD’s in handhelds, portable terminals, mobile phones and various others.
1994
SEIKO Group served as the official time keeper at the Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer.
1996
The company has been divided into SEIKO Precision Inc. and SEIKO Clock Inc.
1997
Established SEIKO Precision (Hong Kong) LTD.
1998
SEIKO Group served as the official time keeper at the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano.
2002
SEIKO Group served as the official time keeper at the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
2012,
Seiko introduced the Astron GPS Solar, which uses GPS signals to automatically adjust to the correct time and date anywhere in the world.
Today, Seiko is known for producing a wide range of watches, including mechanical, quartz, and Kinetic models. The company also produces watches for a variety of different markets, including sports, fashion, and luxury.
